Doubles: Ready to Launch
Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos favourites in doubles draw published today
The doubles draw for the Gijon Open - ATP 250 has been published today and provides for some interesting viewing. Sprinkled with some familiar names, the draw sees some established names as well as some fresh and exciting pairings in the mix.
A veteran of the tour with 24 doubles titles under his belt, Spain’s Marcel Granollers is teaming up with Horacio Zeballos of Argentina and they come into the event as top seeds, hoping to garner some more points to qualify for the end-of-year ATP Finals in Turin.
The second seeds in the doubles is the formidable Italian pairing of Fabio Fognini and Simone Bolelli. The Davis Cup teammates have had a successful year together on the doubles court, winning 2 titles (Rio Open, Umag), earning 3 runner-up trophies (Bastad, Cincinnati Masters and Sydney) and reaching the 3 semifinals (Miami Open, Sofia Open and the Italian Open).
Three-time champs in 2022 (Sofia, Bastad and Mallorca), Rafael Matos (BRA) & David Vega Hernández (ESP) are seeded third, while the Portuguese-British pairing of Francisco Cabral and Jamie Murray round out the seeds at number four.
There are also plenty of other exciting pairings to look out for, not least of which is that of the young Spanish combination of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Martin Landaluce, who received a wild card into this event as a team. This is the second wildcard for Landaluce, who was also awarded one for the singles draw. Gijón local hero Pablo Carreño will team with Joao Sousa of Portugal, while Spaniards Sergio Martos and Jaume Munar were the recipients of the second wildcard into the doubles draw.
The order of play will be available tomorrow afternoon and the action is set to commence on Monday.
