Francisco Cerúndolo, Argentina's new star
The current world No. 27 will play the Gijón Open ATP 250 after winning his first title in Båstad this year
Argentinian tennis will be represented at the Gijón Open ATP 250 by its new rising star: 24-year-old Francisco Cerúndolo from Buenos Aires, who has broken into the Top-30 this season (No. 27).
Winning his first ATP title in Båstad earlier this year, the eldest of the Cerúndolo brothers (his 19-year-old brother Juan Manuel is ranked in the Top-200) was one step away from reaching the final of the Miami Masters 1000, losing to Norwegian Casper Ruud.
He was also a semi-finalist in Hamburg and Rio de Janeiro, and started 2022 by winning an ATP Challenger in Santa Cruz (Bolivia). Last year he reached his first ATP final in his hometown of Buenos Aires, playing from qualifying.
The complete list of entries for the Gijón Open will be released on Tuesday. The tournament organizers have already confirmed the participation Spaniards Pablo Carreño and Roberto Bautista, Russian Andrey Rublev – current world No. 9 –, Italian Fabio Fognini, Belgian David Goffin, American Tommy Paul and Austrian Dominic Thiem – winner of a Grand Slam – in addition to Francisco Cerúndolo.
